Face Profile Change

Facial Profile Change Due To Loss Of Teeth and Removable Dentures

Our natural teeth possess two-part, a crown that is seen in the oral cavity and root which is embedded in the jaw bone. The presence of roots puts the jawbone in a process of continuous stimulation which makes sure that the size and shape of the jaw bone are maintained. When all teeth are lost, the process of stimulation of jaw bone stops and the jaw bone undergoes the process of resorption. Due to the absence of roots, the jaw bone doesn't carry out the function which was initially intended and shrinks in size and becomes thinner and thinner. This means that the entire facial look of an individual also changes.

There is a particular way the face drapes over the jaw bone. The way it does depends upon the shape and size of the jaw bone. The way the facial skin drapes over the jaw bone changes when the bone shape change. As the jaw bone begins to shrink after the loss of teeth, the face starts sagging and loses height since the upper and lower jaw bone undergoes atrophy. This gives the face an aged appearance. The face ages and sags. This is one major problem that denture wearers face. The denture essentially sits over the gums which cover our jawbones. This doesn't stimulate the bone as natural teeth are absent and the process of bone atrophy still continues. This means that the denture will perpetually remain loose or ill-fitted as the bone is undergoing changes and will need constant readjustments.

However, there are other and far more superior options for teeth replacement like dental implants. Unlike removable dentures, dental implants are placed inside the jaw bone. The dental implant is a screw and in placed inside the jaw bone and over this a crown is placed. The placement of dental implants helps stimulate the jaw bone like the roots of natural teeth and prevents it from further shrinkage and atrophy. Studies show that dental implants might even help the bone to regenerate to some extent. This suggests that sooner the implants are placed after extraction of all teeth, the amount of bone loss occurring is minimal which in turn prohibits facial profile changes and thus helps maintain previous facial aesthetics.

However, if dental implants aren't placed in time that means soon after extraction of teeth, and the patients continue to use a removable denture, the process of atrophy will also continue to take place and ultimately lead to a stage where bone loss is extremely severe. In extreme severe bone loss cases, dental professionals use bone grafting or sinus lift procedures to create enough space to put an implant as certain bone height is necessary for the placement and success of a dental implant.

However, recent advances have provided us with another treatment protocol that allows us to place an implant even in cases with severe bone loss. This is known as basal dental implants. We at Jani's implant center and smile studio in Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad are highly trained in this procedure and in our years of practice, we have gotten extremely positive and promising results.

Our clinic is equipped with the highest standards of dental treatment unit which makes the procedure go smoothly and accurately. Our dental imaging center is equipped with CBCT and portable X-ray machines. This means that our patients need not make multiple visits to the x-ray centers and their experience is smooth. We also make sure our sterilization protocols are at par with the international standards. We had a proper water purification in place so that our patients are relaxed and can be assured that they are receiving the best dental care possible. Visit us for a consultation and get to know more about what is the best treatment protocol for you.
