Effect of Removable Denture

Removable dentures can be partial or complete. Partial removable dentures are given in cases where some teeth are missing and complete dentures are advised in cases of absence of all teeth. Removable dentures are by far the most affordable of treatment modalities available but when long term consequences are taken into account, there is a building question on their cost-effectiveness, overall benefits the impact they have on oral health and on overall wellbeing of an individual wearing them.

There are a lot of disadvantages, risks, and complications associated with removable dentures which are as follows -

1) Be it a partial or a complete denture, they are removable, large and bulky. They have to be taken out of the mouth every night to allow the gums to breathe. They also need to be cleaned properly and on a regular basis to avoid plaque and calculus accumulation. They are bulky and occupy a large amount of space in the mouth. If you happen to forget taking them out or even wearing them when you leave house invites a substantial amount of consciousness. However, this problem is basically nullified with the invention of dental implants. Dental implants like natural teeth and fixed into the bone. They are permanent and firmly secured in the jaw bone, they look and feel like natural teeth and doesn't give a bulky feeling.

2) The next major problem is that of gagging. During the replacement of upper teeth by a removable denture, the denture is extended near the beginning of the throat. This provides the retention to the denture. If this is not done, it leads to ill-fitted and loose dentures. This means that the denture will keep falling. However, the problem here is that many people especially are extremely sensitive and have a high gag reflex which makes it extremely uncomfortable to wear such a prosthesis. This is where Dental Implants supersedes conventional dentures. Dental implants will remove the need for an extension as they are placed inside the jaw, which makes them retentive and ha. Dental implants are a brilliant and more advanced alternative for people having a sensitive gag reflex.

3) Dentures, especially the upper dentures are difficult to curate. They often fail to replicate the natural contour and affects the speech grievously. Conventional dentures are made up of acrylic which takes up a lot of space in the mouth and affects the movement of the tongue which is an essential apparatus for carrying out the activity of speech. The sounds like "d" and "t" require the tongue to come in contact with the palate. In presence of a denture, the tongue comes in contact with the palate much sooner than it should. This affects these sounds. On the contrary dental implants are placed in the jaw, there is no artificial covering over the palate, essentially nullifying this problem.

4) There is a saying in the dental community that nothing can replicate the natural teeth and its functions. This stands true especially in the case of a conventional denture. Dentures loosely adhere to the jaw and impair chewing, tasting and digesting of food. The biting force is reduced. The presence of acrylic compromises the sense of taste and temperature. Individuals wearing removable dentures cannot chew their food properly and often swallow it without breaking it down. This leads to an incomplete digestive process that takes place in the mouth. Dental implant by far is the closest we have come to replication the natural tooth. With dental implants, none of these issues are faced and it is like having natural teeth.

5) Partial removable dentures need to be removed every night. This process of continuous wearing and removing disturbs the remaining teeth, especially the adjacent teeth since is garners the support from adjacent teeth. Patients experiencing loosening of the remaining teeth due to continuous pressure put of them. It starts by affecting the adjacent teeth and slowly affects one tooth after the other. This also causes dental decay and periodontal diseases. Ultimately this causes way more problems than it solves. However, on the brighter side of things, dental implants cause no such effect on the remaining teeth. This is because dental implants do not depend upon adjacent teeth for support, they are embedded in the jawbones like natural teeth. Dental implants don't need to be removed and worn again and again as they are held firmly inside the bone, they are like the roots of natural teeth.

6) Dentures cannot stimulate the bone, thus the process of bone resorption continues in the area where teeth are missing. With time the dentures will lose their original fitting as the bone in that area will shrink and continue shrinking. The dentures have to be replaced and even after that, the bone loss process will continue. Dental implants do the exact opposite of this. Dental implants prevent bone loss. Dental implants are placed in the bone taking the place which was previously occupied by the root of the natural tooth. On this implant, a tooth crown is placed. The act of chewing stimulates the bone to remodel and readapt, which prevents bone that ultimately prevents the facial profile from changing.

7) Dentures often are large and bulky, this is done to make sure that the dentures don't break and to compensate for the bone loss. They end up taking more space than natural teeth would and make the lips look too full. This makes the face look unnatural and makes the experience of wearing denture an uncomfortable one. Dental implants recreate the natural contour without stretching the lips and making them look unnatural.

8) Owing to the poor retention of conventional dentures, denture adhesives have to be used. This leads to soreness, which makes the tissue sensitive and inflamed. Overstimulation causes an impact on the nervous system too. This disadvantage is completely gone with dental implants.

9) Dentures make people look old, the face essential sags and give it a sunken appearance.

10) They are fragile, they break easily and can get lost easily. The replacement time is long and requires multiple visits. Dental implants, on the other hand, are permanent, once they are in you can forget about these issues and live your life without any hassles and not a single worry.
